Top 5 Favourite Music Videos

1. NEEDTOBREATHE Ft Gavin Degraw - Brother

On my favourite music videos is this video for the song Brother. The narrative behind this video is the relationship between siblings. This video is shot well as it has good links to the lyrics and the song in general, is also switches shots on the beat which is key for a music video.  In  this video i like then use of the box with the lights around it whilst they are singing because it is simple yet effective. The use of the quick shots of siblings in also very effective because it agin, links to the song.

2. Katy Perry - Part of Me

This music video by Katy Perry is another one of my favourite videos because of the message behind the video, the fact that she joins the marines straight after a break up and which shows strength is important. Further more i like the fact that in this music video the use the message of self worth to create a great music video.

3. DJ Snake ft Bipolar Sunshine - Middle

In this video it production qualities were a lot more complex because of the context of the video. This means that there are a lot of stunts that are pulled off within this music video. Another thing that makes this video more interesting is that it ha a storyline which is that it is about a young boy who feels like he is an outcast so dresses like a superhero to hide himself from society.

4. Nathan Sykes - Over and Over Again

This music video as there clear theme of love that has been portrayed between two people. Just like the lyrics from this song suggest, this video switches between 2 different scenes, one from when they were both young and then again when she is older she paints them.

5. Don Diablo & Steve Aoki x Simon ft. Bullysongs - What we started

This my next favourite music video. First of all it has all of the characteristics of a music video, by this i mean that the clips used are edited to the beat of the song. The shots are also varied between different scenes from higher shots to lower shots.

Lighting in Music videos and Short films

Lighting

Lighting is commonly used within films, TV shown, music videos and photographs. It is used mainly so you can see the centre focus, it also used to add effect to a certain shot, either positive or negative.

Lighting in Short Films

For short films usually lighting is generated more naturally because it often uses more generic settings such as a house or a forest. Because of these settings lighting does not need to be forced because directors tend to want to use as much natural lighting as possible because it adds a sense of realism to the short film. Below is an example from a short film called transitions, in this cafe scene there is clear evidence that only natural lighting is used.

Lighting in Music Videos

Within music videos, lighting is used as effect to create an atmosphere that is linked to the genre and lyrics of a song. For example, dark lighting if the video includes negative imagery. The lighting can also be brighter if the imagery is more positive.

These are my own examples of side lighting that is one of the lighting techniques that i will be using when doing my music video. I have decided to foucus on using soide lighting as i thyink thatr it adds the most effect.

Codes and conventions within our music video

Codes and conventions
After deciding to do a music video one thing that we began to look at is codes and conventions of a myusic video which we needed to look at in order to form our music video around a base. Some of these codes and conventions include:

  • Editing on the beat
  • Camera
  • Mise-en-scene
  • Sound
  • Narrative
  • Setting
These codes and conventions have become key in helping to shape the idea for our music video and to do so we have decided to use all of the codes and conventions that are listed above.
Editing on the beat- this is the one convention that next to every music video will follow, it means that every shot will start and end between a noticable beat in the song that will help with the flow of the video itself. We aim to use the technique of editing on the beat so that our video flow after the process of putting the clips together.

Camera - Camera is another key convention in a music video as camera angles can change the effect that a shot has on an audience member. Differnt camera angles and shot types are used to help diverse that music video so that it does not become plan or repetative. In our music video we hope to use a range of shots and techniques such as pans, close-ups- mid shots etc this will allow our musioc video tpo seem less repeative.

Mise-en-scene - Mise-en-scene is typically used in music videos that have any form of an narrative in order to help the music video come across in a certain way

Sound - In a music video sound is a generallised convetion as the sound is the song that the music video is placed upon., this however does not mean that digetic sounds and non-digetic sounds are not used this type of thing usually occurs when there is a strong and longer narrative to the music video other sounds may be made promonant in order to dive the narrative further. Digetic/non-digetic sound will not be key for us in our music video because of our narrative.

Narrative - Narratives are not always clear within music videos and some do not use them Narratives can differ in legth and genre depending on the impression of the song

Looking at Codes and conventions has helped us to create a music video which appeals to a wide ranged audiences

Deconstruction of music video

Because i am looking at music videos i have decided to look at one music video in particular to look in depth at what i want to use in my music video and what works well in its criteria. I have decided to deconstruct the music video for It's Time - Imagine Dragons. I have chosen this song/music video because it is close in genre of the music video and song that we are using. I will be looking at:

  • Mise-en-Scene
  • Camera
  • Editing - on the beat
  • Sound

The first shot in this music video is a close - up shot of a mid waist which begins to pan out as the shot becomes a long shot which is where the lyrics start, i like this shot because of the way in which its shot as it establishes the mood and genre of the rest of the music video. This is further emphasised by the colours used in the background and clothing all of which are dark tones which gives a darker atmosphere to the video.
The next shot is of 4 men walking across a desert looking space this sets the establishing shot for the setting of the video which matches the atmosphere from the clothing and lighting all of which is dim and dark. You can also see in the shot that there it is only focus on the 4 men, all of who make up Imagine Dragons.

Introduction for A2

Welcome to my A2 Media studies blog,
This is the link to my first blog which i created for AS:http://jazmarshall87.blogspot.co.uk/

For AS I created a Preliminary task before I went on to put together a Film opening that was 2.30 and had our own put together story line. I was in charge of the editing and I worked with 2 others. We got along well and I think that we had a really good film opening at the end of our project. Whilst making this film opening we experienced a few problems such as the software, Premiere Pro shutting down in the middle of editing, when it hadn't save new changes and when the format of the clips was not correct, so it would not except or load the clips, we also had trouble with the sound because in some places we had audio that did not fit the clip or that was not long enough. However, we were able to but together a film opening based off of the disappearance of Gennete Tate who has one of the longest disappearances ever. It had good audio and I think it turned out really well.
This year I hope to improve further with my editing skills and produce a better flowing video.
