Lady Gaga and Intertextuality

For this course we decided to look at a music artist who shows many aspects of Intertextuality. One artist who has done this in a memorable way is Lady Gaga who brought around a completely different concept for music videos with intertextuality. Since releasing her first music video in 2009 for her first single, Just Dance she has since created many music videos which all coheir to the idea of Intertextuality. During her rise in fame she released the song Telephone which featured Beyonce. The music video for this song was published on the 11th March 2010. The Music video is 9:32 long and show evident references to other texts.

One of the first references we see in this music video is from the text used in the opening sequence which reference the 70's time period. With the bold font and colours used it references this time period that this music video is set in. The use of this intertextuality shows that intertextuality doesn't end with referencing through dialogue, and actions made by a protagonist. The text also resembles of that in the film poster for the film Pulp Fiction where the same colours and shape of text has been used.

Another reference we see in this music video is with the scene in the car with Lady Gaga and Beyonce. The car used is this sequence is the same car used in Kill Bill, a film directed by Tarantino. This is yet another reference to a separate text, on which is continually referenced within the music video. This truck was also featured in the music video for Missy Elliot's, I'm really hot. There is also another link to this film when Beyonce enters the diner, dressed in all-yellow, this is a reference to the film poster for Kill Bill where the main protagonist is dressed in all-yellow.

In this screenshot we can see is the references made to the Film, Pulp Fiction another film by Tarantino. The reference made about this film is the sequence when lady Gaga calls Beyonce Hunny B, this links back to a similar scene in Pulp fiction when the character is called  Hunny Bunny by another. This is evidence that Lady Gaga is using explicit textual references to Tarantinos work in homage.

Audience Feedback for our current footage

Today, we decided to show our 1 minute of footage to our primary audience we did  this so that as wee continue to film we can establish what is working and what we need to rethink within our music video.

Positive Feedback
  • Good editing on the beat
  • Black and white shots are good
Things to think about/change

  • Shot of tumbling weir to the church was unclear in regards to the narrative
  • Introduce colour
  • More shots of our protagonist
  • Re film some shots

Because of this we have decided to re-film some of our shots as well as look at our narrative again and tye over any lose ends in hope that our narrative will make more sense to our audience. We also told our audience that we plan to make some of the shots stay in colour to contrast the rest of the music video to show happier times for our protagonist. We hope that this will also help in explaining our narrative in more depth and to help our primary and secondary audiences understand the narrative further. By doing this and changing our music video accordingly we hope to make our music video to appeal to a wider auidience.

We then decided to create an audience questionare and have one of our peers who said they liked the consept for our music video, complete it which thenm enabled us to alter our narrative and such accoringly. Below is our represented audience member
