Steve Neale - Genre Theory

Steve Neale is a theorist who is known for his ideas concerning the concept of genres. His main idea is that individual genres has different codes and conventions that make them recognisable to audiences. Genre is important for any media product as it helps to establish the not only aspects of a film but it also helps to make the film identifiable for others. Having a clear genre also helps to set a primary and secondary audience which producers are able to shape there film around. For example, some of the conventions of a romance film are:

  • It usually is set somewhere which a chance in counter could occur such as the beach or a big city such as New York.
  • The sound track in a film usually reflects the protagonists mode in different scenes.
  • Another convention is the props that are used are typically symbols of love this can be anything from rings to flowers to hearts.
